Charge my vehicle

Once installed, CleverCharge can operate as a simple EV charger without any setup.

Taking it out of the box, mounting it on the wall, connecting it to power appropriately according to your charger variant installation instructions, then plugging it in to an EV, it will charge this EV.

Setup a charging schedule to save money

Utility companies generally offer “Time of Use” (TOU) rates.  They do this because the demand for electricity is higher at different times of day and can also be different on weekends versus weekdays.

CleverCharge offers two different methods of setting up a charge schedule.  Which one you use depends on how important certain things are to you, and how much you know about your utility rates.

CleverCharge Charge Scheduling options:

  • Smart Schedule
  • Custom Schedule

If you don’t know your utility rates at different times of day or weekends and weekdays, you can have CleverCharge guess the best times to schedule your charging using AI.  CleverCharge uses your account zip code to determine which utility company services are in your area, then attempts to use the most likely utility program from that utility to determine your TOU rates for you.

To determine your TOU rates (or if you are even on a TOU plan), you can do one of the following:

1. Check Your Utility Bill

Your monthly electric bill is the most direct source of information. Look for:

  • Rate plan name (e.g., TOU-D, E-1, Residential Tiered)
  • Rate per kWh (can vary by time of use or consumption tier)
  • Delivery + generation charges (some utilities separate them)
  • Fixed charges or minimum fees

2. Visit Your Utility’s Website

Most utilities publish detailed rate plans online. Look for:

  • A "Rates & Tariffs" or "Pricing Plans" section.
  • A rate comparison tool (some let you plug in your usage data).
  • Time-of-Use (TOU) schedules and seasonal rates, if applicable.

Examples:

3. Use a Utility Rate Lookup Tool

Some third-party tools can estimate your rate plan:

  • EnergySage or WattBuy
  • Your smart meter app (many utilities let you see hourly usage and cost)

4. Contact Customer Service

If you can’t find a clear answer:

  • Call or chat with your utility and ask:
  • “What rate plan am I currently on?”
  • “What are my kWh rates and time-of-use windows?”
  • “Are there any cheaper rate plans available based on my usage?”

Setup Smart AI range alerts for my vehicle

CleverCharge continuously calculates your expected driving distance for each day using AI algorithms.  These calculations adapt automatically when your driving environment changes, for example:

  • winter, summer, etc.
  • Your driving habits change (you get a new job further away, etc.)

The result is that CleverCharge can send you AI driven alerts to help ensure that you always have the range you need in all your EV’s for the drive distances and power consumption these vehicles have.

SmartAI alerts go to the person that normally drives the vehicle.  This is done so you only get alerts for your EV, not for your partner’s EV (or your Son’s EV). SmartAI alerts are vehicle specific and require the use of the CleverKey to work.

This alert is triggered when:

  • You arrive in Bluetooth range of one of your CleverCharge Chargers.
    • NOTE: If you have multiple homes and multiple chargers configured in the CleverCharge app, this alert will occur regardless of which home or charger you arrive at.
  • The range of your vehicle is lower than what CleverCharge has calculated you will need for tomorrow’s drive

A typical “Low Miles AI Arrival Alert” would look like this:

“Your estimated range is (xxx) miles and CleverCharge believes you will need at least (yyy) miles for your driving tomorrow.  You should plug your vehicle into the charger.”

The Nightly AI Plug-in Alert is triggered when:

  • The time you specified to get your nightly alert is reached
  • Your vehicle is in-range of one of your CleverCharge chargers
  • Your vehicle is NOT plugged into ANY of your CleverCharge chargers
  • The range of your vehicle is lower than what CleverCharge has calculated you will need for tomorrow’s drive

A typical “Nightly AI Plug-in Alert” would look like this:

“Your estimated range is (xxx) miles and CleverCharge believes you will need at least (yyy) miles for your driving tomorrow.  You should plug your vehicle into the charger before you go to bed”

Setup which vehicles can charge on my charger

Setup and manage multiple vehicles at a single home

With installation and setup of your CleverCharge EV charger, you also received a single CleverKey device. The setup process in the CleverCharge app would have guided you through creating an account, creating a household, adding a charger to the household, and adding a vehicle to the account.

To add another vehicle to your account, you must purchase another CleverKey separately. Purchase as many additional CleverKeys as you may need for the vehicles to plan to add to your account.

To purchase additional CleverKeys:

  • On the CleverCharge website https://www.clevercharge.com/, navigate to “CleverCharge Store”, where you can find CleverKey in the “EV Accessories” section.

Before purchasing additional CleverKeys, explore our CleverKey Vehicle Compatibility chart to see if your vehicle is compatible: https://www.clevercharge.com/documentation

  • NOTE: If your vehicle is not currently listed in our Vehicle Compatibility chart, please send us an email at support@clevercharge.com. The CleverCharge team is continually working to add new CleverKey vehicle support.

In the CleverCharge App, select the menu expansion button in the top right corner of the app (see screenshot).

Select “Add Vehicle” and the CleverCharge app will walk you through adding another vehicle to your account.

Once completed, you will now be able to manage multiple vehicles with the CleverCharge app.

Setup and manage multiple chargers at a single home.

With installation and setup of your first CleverCharge charger, you would have been guided through the process of adding a household, a charger, and a vehicle in the CleverCharge app.

If you made the decision to purchase a second charger, great! To add another charger to the SAME home as the first charger, in the CleverCharge App, select the menu expansion button in the top right corner of the app (see screenshot).

Select “Add Charger” and the CleverCharge app will walk you through adding another charger to your household.

IMPORTANT: If you have added more than one household to your account (i.e. you own more than one home), you must first select the correct household by swiping left or right, until the household you want to add the charger to is displayed.

Setup and manage multiple homes

CleverCharge can manage multiple homes and the charging needs across these homes. To add another household (home) to your account, in the CleverCharge App, select the menu expansion button in the top right corner of the app (see screenshot).

Select “Add Household” and the CleverCharge app will walk you through adding another household to your account.

After adding a household to your account, you will see a screen like below:

You must now add a charger to this household. Once a charger is setup at this new home, any vehicles that are part of your account that come within Bluetooth range of this household’s charger will automatically show up on that household page. If you drive your vehicle between households, the vehicle will automatically be shown at the last household it was seen.
