What are “Smart Chargers”?

CleverCharge represents a totally new level of “Smart” charging.  Before CleverCharge, the industry has considered a charger “Smart” if it did the following through a phone app:

  • Show the real time status of the charger
    • Charging
    • Idle
    • Etc.
  • Could set a charge schedule by time of day and day of week.
  • Could start and stop charging remotely from the phone app.

CleverCharge is not just a stand-alone EV charging device.  CleverCharge is a complete home charge management system that is designed to provide a charging experience other chargers cannot, including:

  • Multiple Chargers in a home
  • Multiple Homes for an account
  • Electric Vehicle inventory at a house
  • AI driven charge information for the household
  • Specific AI information for EACH vehicle belonging to the household

And much more.

What features does CleverCharge have?

CleverCharge provides a centralized view of:

  • All of your home EV chargers
  • All of your homes (cabin, main house, etc.)
  • Which vehicles are at which home.
  • Which vehicles are charging on which charger at which home
  • The range (in miles) each vehicle currently has
  • The health of each vehicle
  • The estimated time each vehicle will be done charging, for each vehicle charging
  • Vehicles that are away from home and the last range and health status of each vehicle that is away from home.

CleverCharge, like other smart chargers, has these common “smart features”:

  • WiFi connection to your home wifi for:
    • Over-the-air firmware updates
    • Enable Phone App feature support
  • Phone App common smart features:
    • Remote Start and Stop Charging
    • App Authorization of every use of the charger (for outside installations when you don’t want your neighbors using your electricity for free)
    • Setup of a charging schedule to allow charging to be performed at the lowest rates possible.
    • Charging complete alerts to an account phone number (text or push alerts) or an email address.
    • A charging connection nightly alert based ONLY on if any vehicle is connected at a specific time or not.
    • Manual charge authorization from the app (ie, charging only happens if the app gives permission for each charge session).

CleverCharge Clever AI features are only available and exclusively powered by CleverKey. CleverKey is an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) device that is connected to each of your vehicles, allowing CleverCharge to know key information about the vehicle being charged.

Clever AI features will only be available if CleverKey is supported on your vehicle. Explore our CleverKey Vehicle Compatibility chart to see if your vehicle is compatible: https://www.clevercharge.com/documentation

CleverCharge expands the role of the home EV charger to a full home charge management system and introduces features that no other “smart” EV charger has. Our UNIQUE and PATENTED Clever AI features are only available using the supplied CleverKey.

  • Range shown for each vehicle (in miles) - CleverCharge Clever AI calculates mileage values based on the actual mileage you get on a day-by-day basis in the conditions you drive in.
  • Charge Reports - Per vehicle outlining the estimated cost for driving each vehicle
  • Nightly Clever AI Alerts - Just in case you forgot to plug in already, CleverCharge AI calculates the number of miles you will drive tomorrow and intelligently determines if you need to plug your vehicle into your charger at a given time you specify.
  • Arrival Clever AI Alerts - When you arrive home, CleverCharge AI calculates the number of miles you will drive tomorrow and intelligently determines if you need to plug your charger into the charger based on the range currently in the vehicle when you arrive at home.
  • Charging Clever AI Alerts - CleverCharge AI calculates the number of miles you will drive tomorrow and intelligently determines if charge is needed, then will send an alert when that range has been met for that specific vehicle.
  • Vehicle Energy Report - The CleverCharge vehicle energy report estimates how much you spend on each vehicle every month by charging at home, AND how much you spend charging at fast charging stations away from home.
  • Vehicle Trip Reports - CleverKey records the miles you travel and estimates how much you spend on each trip for each vehicle.
  • Vehicle In-Range - CleverCharge detects when any of your vehicles with a CleverKey are in the garage (in Bluetooth range) of ANY of your households. Vehicles automatically show up at the household where they were last present on the CleverCharge phone app.
  • Vehicle Health - CleverCharge queries the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes.  If issues are found, the vehicle is shown with an indicator that the vehicle has a health issue.  Vehicles with trouble codes should be taken to your dealership, diagnosed, and fixed to prevent breakdowns on the side of the road.
  • All Vehicle Charge Status - CleverCharge pairs with the CleverKey in all your vehicles, allowing the phone app to show you which vehicles are charging on which charger.
  • CleverKey Smart Authorization - CleverCharge can be setup to ONLY allow vehicles that are assigned to you with a CleverKey to charge in your household. For vehicles that do not have a CleverKey, the CleverCharge phone app will ask the account owner to authorize the charge.  Vehicles with a CleverKey assigned to your account will automatically be authorized to charge.  This is a very useful feature if your charger is located outside of your garage, to avoid unauthorized vehicles being allowed to charge.

How do I decide which CleverCharge Model to buy?

CleverCharge is offered in 4 models based on 2 different categories.  Before selecting a CleverCharge model, you should ask the following questions:

  • Do I want my charger mounted outside or inside my garage?
  • Do I want to be able to easily replace my charger with a new charger, OR do I want my charger to charge 20% faster?
  • Does my vehicle have an NACS connector or a J1772 connector?

Hardwired or NEMA 14-50 powered?

  • If you plan to install your charger outside of your garage, order a hardwired version.
  • If you are installing your charger inside the garage and would like the maximum charge rate possible (48A), order a hardwired version.
  • If you are installing your charger inside the garage and are OK with a slightly lower charge rate (40A) yet want the ease of installing Level 2 chargers without an electrician, order a NEMA 14-50 version.

NACS or J1772 charge connector to the vehicle?

If you have one or more vehicles with a single charge port type, purchase your CleverCharge charger with the connector variant that aligns with your vehicle charge port type.

If you have 2 or more vehicles and have both kinds of charge port connections, we recommend purchasing a NACS version to charge the NACS vehicle(s) and buying an adapter for the J1772 vehicle(s). Adapters are publicly available to purchase for adapting NACS to J1772 AND for J1772 to NACS.

NOTE: All Manufacturers that sell EV’s in the US have announced that they will be transitioning to the NACS connector (away from SAE J1772 connectors).

  • Newer vehicles are more likely to have NACS than J1772 charge connectors.
  • All Tesla vehicles use the NACS connector.
  • Check your vehicle (or ask your dealer) to see which connector your specific vehicle uses for charging.

In the near future, all new EV vehicles sold in the US will have NACS charge connectors.

Will CleverCharge charge my vehicle?

If your vehicle has a J1772 or a J3400/NACS charging port, CleverCharge will charge it.

Alongside 4-wheeled EV vehicles, CleverCharge will also charge any EV motorcycle sold in the US.

All common charging smart features (charge scheduling, App charge authentication, charge complete alert, nightly plug-in alert) will work on all EV’s sold in the US.

The CleverCharge team is responsible for ensuring that all SmartAI advertised features work for all vehicles listed in the official CleverKey Vehicle Compatibility chart. This is validated through real world testing on real world vehicles.

As long as our team confirms a vehicle provides the necessary data through our testing, we indicate this by listing the vehicle in our CleverKey Vehicle Compatibility chart.

Where is the best location for my charger?

The best location for your charger depends on several factors:

  • Do you have a garage?
  • Does your garage have room for a vehicle?
  • Do you wish to charge vehicles in your driveway near your garage?
  • Do you mind the extra expense of installing a charger outside?
  • Do you have more than one EV you want to charge?

Let’s go through a few scenarios and the decision-making process for each:

  • You have room in your garage for your EV
  • You have only 1 EV and will not likely get a 2nd EV in the future.

In these scenarios, mounting the charger on the wall in front of the vehicle, to the side of the vehicle where the charging port is located, is the best location.  Here is the reasoning:

  • Mounting the charger inside the garage keeps the charger secure from unauthorized usage by other people (giving them free electricity you pay for when you aren’t home)
  • Mounting the charger outside is more expensive since it requires either mounting to the side of your house, or the use of a pedestal (bought separately) mounted in concrete.
  • Having the charger located for best access to your ONE vehicle is the easiest for day-to-day use.
  • Having the charger inside keeps the charger and your vehicle safe from vandalism vs. charging in your driveway overnight.
  • You have room in your garage for your EV’s (more than one)
  • You own more than one EV (or plan to in the future)

In these scenarios, mounting the charger between the 2 vehicles on the wall in front of the vehicles is the best location.  Here is the reasoning:

  • While it is possible to purchase 2 CleverCharge chargers and mount one for each EV, many homes do not have room in their electrical panel for 2 60A 220V breakers (The average home being built today will have 200A service for the ENTIRE house.  Two fully charging Level 2 chargers will draw up to ~100A all by themselves leaving the rest of the home (Air Conditioning/Heating, water heater, well pumps, refrigerator, etc.) with only half of the total available which could lead to your main breaker tripping.
  • EV’s do not typically NEED to be charged every day (just like gas vehicles don’t require you to get gas every day).  It is easy to charge 2 vehicles with 1 charger AS LONG AS THE CHARGER IS MOUNTED WHERE THE 25ft CABLE CAN REACH BOTH VEHICLES WHEN PARKED.
  • Having the charger inside keeps the charger and your vehicle safe from vandalism vs. charging in your driveway overnight.
  • You have only 1 EV
  • You have a garage
  • You sometimes want to charge other EV’s (friends or relatives that visit) without having them pull into your garage (and shuffling vehicles).

In these scenarios, mounting the charger inside the garage near the garage door is ideal.  If possible, mount the charger so that you don’t have to drag the cable over your EV in the garage to charge it.  Here is the reasoning:

  • You want to be able to charge your EV at night with the garage door closed for security and convenience.
  • Placing the charger near the garage door will allow you to charge at least one parking position in your driveway as well as your vehicle inside the garage.
  • You do not have a garage, or you don’t have room in your garage for your EV
  • You only want to charge your EV

In these scenarios, mounting the charger on the side of the house, close to the driveway, is the best location.  Here is the reasoning:

  • Charger is available for charging your vehicle while in at least one parking position in the driveway.
  • Even though CleverCharge is designed and tested to operate at full power with direct sunlight, it is better if you mount your charger where it will not be in direct sunlight in the hottest part of the day in hot regions as this may shorten the already long life of the CleverCharge product.
  • You frequently want to charge many different vehicles in your driveway.

In this scenario, you should mount your EV charger to an EV charging pedestal.  The charging pedestal should be mounted at least 1 vehicle length beyond the front of the driveway closest to your home.  This allows up to 4 vehicle parking spaces to be within range of the 25ft charging cable the CleverCharge charger offers.

What settings inside my vehicle can interfere with CleverCharge?

Example #1

CleverCharge can do advanced AI scheduling of multiple vehicles and multiple chargers within your home. Since your EV vehicle likely supports some charge scheduling features found in your Vehicle Manufacturer’s phone app, AND/OR in the vehicle’s infotainment screen, these vehicle features could be configured to collide with similar CleverCharge features. Here is the reasoning:

  • You set up CleverCharge to schedule charging ONLY between 3pm and 7am the next day.
  • You set up your vehicle to schedule charging ONLY between 7pm to 7am the next day.
  • If you plug CleverCharge into this vehicle at 4pm, CleverCharge will try to initiate charging …. but the vehicle itself will not actually take this charge until 7pm.
  • In this case, CleverCharge will display “Waiting On Vehicle” and your charge will NOT start until 7pm.

To take full advantage of the AI charging features of CleverCharge, make sure to disable the charging schedule on your vehicle. This allows CleverCharge to charge your vehicle based on:

  • The range you need for tomorrow’s drive (based on AI analysis of actual driving)
  • Your utility rates time of day schedule

Example #2

Another vehicle side setting which could interact with CleverCharge is the Max % Battery Charge setting. Many EV vehicles have this kind of setting, and allow it to be user adjustable. This setting avoids the battery being charged to a value other than 100%, in order to extend vehicle battery life. This setting could clash with CleverCharge settings. Here is the reasoning:

  • You configure CleverCharge to charge your vehicle to 100% capacity.
  • Your vehicle is configured to only allow charging to 80% capacity.
  • CleverCharge will charge your vehicle until the vehicle says stop.

In this example, if the vehicle is set to stop at less than 100%, then CleverCharge will stop charging at that point, even though you have told CleverCharge to charge to 100%. CleverCharge can NOT override vehicle settings associated with charging.

What do the different LED’s on CleverCharge represent?

  • Blue – ON – Indicates power is applied to CleverCharge.
  • Red – ERROR – Either the charging session has failed, or CleverCharge has encountered a failure (use phone app to see the exact nature of charging failure)
  • Black/No Color – OFF – No power is applied to CleverCharge.
  • Red – No WiFi Connection
  • Solid Blue – Good WiFi Connection
  • Blinking Blue – Weak WiFi Connection

Bluetooth is only used to set up the CleverCharge charger, and to transfer vehicle information from CleverKey(s).

  • OFF – No Bluetooth communication
  • ON – Bluetooth communication in progress

An 8-segment charging status ring is lit with 4 LED’s (1 LED for 2 segments) in a circle around the center “C” power LED.

  • If Charging a vehicle WITH CleverKey:
    • Vehicle Charge 0 - 25% - First 2 segments breathing on and off, all other segments OFF
    • Vehicle Charge 26 - 50% - First 2 segments ON, next 2 Segments breathing, all other segments OFF
    • Vehicle Charge 51% - 75% - First 4 segments ON, Next 2 segments breathing, last 2 segments OFF
    • Vehicle Charge 76% - 99% - First 6 segments ON, last 2 segments breathing
    • Vehicle Charge Complete 100% – All 8 segments ON.

  • If Charging a vehicle WITHOUT CleverKey:
    • Charging (Vehicle State of Charge is not known without CleverKey) – All 8 segments breathing on and off.
    • Charge Complete (Vehicle said Stop Charging) – All 8 segments ON.

What does “Waiting on Vehicle” mean?

CleverCharge cannot override the on-vehicle charge settings and Manufacturer programmed logic in your EV. When CleverCharge wants to charge the EV, it “asks” the EV to start charging.  There are several situations that can cause the EV to force CleverCharge to “Wait” to charge.

Some of these situations are shown below:

  • Your vehicle has a charging schedule set inside the vehicle, and it is not yet time for the vehicle to charge (determined by the internal vehicle schedule).
    • NOTE: CleverCharge recommends that you disable all in-vehicle charge scheduling in order to fully utilize the AI capabilities of CleverCharge.

  • Your vehicle is completely charged already. Some vehicles will put charging in the “Wait” mode when the vehicle is already fully charged. If your vehicle does this, CleverCharge reports “Waiting on Vehicle”.

  • Some vehicles require battery conditioning/heating/cooling, etc. prior to charging.  In these situations, some vehicles will put charging in “Wait” mode.  If your vehicle does this, CleverCharge reports “Waiting on Vehicle”.

What does “Pairing” mean?

CleverCharge has the unique ability among home EV chargers to identify the vehicle that is being charged by a particular charger. This feature allows CleverCharge to assign charge events to a particular vehicle and to show you which of your EV’s is connected to which of your CleverCharge Chargers.

When CleverCharge is first plugged into your vehicle, and you have 1 or more vehicles that have been added with a CleverKey, CleverCharge uses a proprietary routine to determine which vehicle it is charging.  During the time that CleverCharge is figuring out what vehicle it is hooked up to, the app will show “Paring” while CleverCharge “Pairs” to a vehicle.

  • NOTE: When charging a vehicle that does not have a CleverKey, CleverCharge app will show “Unknown Vehicle” after charging.

What does “Waiting on Authorization” mean?

CleverCharge can be set up to require prior authorization for vehicles to charge on your EV charger.  This is frequently done when the charger is located outside of your garage where others might be able to use it without your knowledge.

CleverCharge has 3 different authorization modes:

None

When “None” is chosen for “Authentication” (which is the default setting out of box), any vehicle that plugs into CleverCharge will charge without asking you.  This is normally how chargers that are inside the garage are set up.

Ask Every Time

When “Ask Every Time” is selected for “Authentication”, CleverCharge will NOT charge the vehicle until you open the CleverCharge app, select the charger (if you have more than one) and hit the “Authorize” button for that charger.

CleverKey Authorization

When “CleverKey Authorization” is selected for “Authentication”, CleverCharge will NOT charge any vehicle that is not part of your account (You must have a CleverKey to add a vehicle to your account).

In this mode, when a vehicle belonging to your account plugs into your CleverCharge charger, it will charge without any further authorization or action on your part.

If a vehicle that is NOT part of your account (or does not have a CleverKey) is plugged into your CleverCharge Charger, it will wait until you open your CleverCharge phone app, select the charger and hit the “Authorize” button to charge the vehicle.

This option is best if all your EV’s have a CleverKey and your charger is mounted outside of your garage.  This gives you the best of both worlds where your vehicles will always charge without asking you, and any visitors or unauthorized users will require authorization from you before the charger charges their vehicle.
